Althea's "Hang-ups"

Friday, October 20, 2006 by Dawn B
Ever have trouble reaching the Burnetts by phone? Perhaps this will explain things.

Our darling little one LOVES the phone. I mean, whoa, does this kid love telephones!
Really, when you think about it, what's not to love? Little beeps, lights, sometimes a mysterious voice talking to you--really quite cool now that I think about it.

What this means though is that every time she sees us using the phone, she screams like a little banshee to get hold of the phone. I hear someone out there saying, "She just needs to learn she can't have it. Don't give it to her." Tried it. Many times. She still goes nuts for the phone EVERY time.

Giving her the phone wouldn't be so problematic. I can put the call on speakerphone and still talk. Here's the real difficulty--Althea has an incredible knack with these things and manages to hang up within seconds each time. She's already hung up on her grandparents multiple times. (Thankfully, they think it's cute.)

Althea and Xena the Cat

Wednesday, October 04, 2006 by Dawn B
As some of you know, one area that we worried about before Althea came home was the potential conflict with our cat--Xena, Warrior Princess Kitty.
We like Xena quite a lot, but . . .well . . .let's just say she's doesn't play well with others. Given her feistiness and usual habit of completely disappearing whenever children come to the house, we really wondered how she would deal with Althea's arrival.
Initially, she seemed predictably put out about the whole thing (and literally put herself out). She wouldn't even come in the house for about two weeks!
Eventually though, she figured out that she would have to learn to cope with this tiny intruder. I think it helped that Althea has always LOVED Xena, always been fascinated and thrilled whenever she even spotted her at all. Cats know they deserve admiration, so they usually respond well to it.
So, as you can see, they have reached a pretty good understanding. Xena even rubs up against Althea (then quickly scoots away). Althea has learned the word "gentle," and applies the meaning well most of the time.
I suppose they may still have some interesting encounters as Althea gets faster and rowdier. (Whoa, there's a sobering picture.)
But for now, we're grateful both for gentle toddler admiration and feline tolerance.

Sunday Afternoon Lights

Sunday, October 01, 2006 by Dawn B
Hi friends!
Althea here.
My Mama has been super busy lately, so she asked if I'd post a blog and let you know how we're doing.
Well, all in all it's going quite well. I really like the learning center I go to several days per week. (But don't tell my mom. I always fuss when she's there. Makes her feel needed.)
I'm having a great time walking (actually I prefer running!) I can't believe how much more stuff I can reach now.
I thought I'd share some pics from my latest sports adventures with you.
Are you ready for some football!?!

I just love kickin' back with my Baba and watching the Big Men go crunch!

Here I am, getting into the proper stance for the O line.

Sometimes, I just cannot believe the refereeing at these games. Let the guys play, for crying out loud!

As you may have noticed, I have opted to become an "Urlacher backer." Many teams are vying for my loyalty, but I think the Bears really have what it takes to go all the way this year! (Besides their coach must be a really sweet guy--his name is Lovey!)

Thanks to my friend Kelly from church for the cool jersey!

I leave you with a thought from the wisdom files of John Madden: "Winning is a great cologne."
