August 3rd--Althea & the Great American Pastime

Saturday, August 05, 2006 by Dawn B
Althea went to her first ball game this week, watching our Sioux Falls Canaries, who almost pulled it out with a valiant effort at the end (not that we were able to stay for the whole game--our night life isn't quite what it used to be). Anyway, here are Althea's thoughts on the whole experience:

"Well, I do like my patriotic wardrobe choices, especially the hat."

"The hat is even better for playing peek-a-boo with Baba."

"Peek-a-boo with my friend Krista is also fun, but I'm still not quite sure what they want me to do with the ball."

"This I know what to do with!
Thanks for the pizza, Ms. Julie!"

"Hmmm . . . there appears to be some sort of sporting event taking place down there."

"Someone needs to show these guys how to make a proper spit-ball."

"Oh my stars and stripes! Did you see that!?! Did you see that?!?"

"Seriously, Mama, are you paying any attention to the game?"

"I love being an American!!"

(Cue choir humming Proud to Be an American)

August 2-Melon Crazy!

O.k. did we mention that Althea kind of likes WATERMELON?!?!

The delightful carnage!
Oh the watermelon-anity of it!

With our rinds lifted high, we say, "Thank you, O Lord, for watermelon!"

July 31--A New Coffee Achiever?

Tuesday, August 01, 2006 by Dawn B
Dorothy Sayers, one of my favorite theologians, says that when Jesus said we must become like little children, he did not mean we should stay children, but look forward eagerly to growing more and more: "All normal children (however much we discourage them) look forward to growing up. 'Except as ye become as little children,' except you can wake up on your fiftieth birthday with the same forward-looking excitement and interest in life you had when you were five, 'ye cannot see the Kingdom of God.'"
Althea demonstrates this forward-looking excitement every day, wanting SO much to do whatever her Baba and Mama, or bigger kids do.
One of her abiding quests in life is to drink coffee!
Every morning, she watches both her parents drink this beverage, with considerable satisfaction--it's only natural she should want to get in on some. The other day, for the sake of peace, I brought her a travel mug (empty of course).
It satisfied her for that morning, but probably won't work for long.
Actually, it will now be rare that we will all get to drink coffee and hang around in bed--it's back to work for Mama and Baba tomorrow. Sigh.
